Imperial Red is quarried around Ilkal in Karnataka. It is a deep, saturated red with black and dark grey crystals distributed through it, and it is one of the strongest colour statements in Indian granite.
It is used most often on exteriors: entrance porticos, temple work, plinth bands and column cladding, where its colour holds up against sunlight and weather without fading. Indoors it is usually used in measured amounts, as a border, a stair riser band or a single feature panel.
The stone is hard, low in water absorption and takes a very high polish, which deepens the red considerably. A flamed finish, by contrast, lightens it towards a dusty brick tone and gives good grip for outdoor steps.
