Dholpur Beige comes from the sandstone belt around Dholpur in eastern Rajasthan. It is a fine, even-grained cream to pale beige stone, and it has been used in North Indian building for centuries because it cuts and carves without splitting.
It is the standard stone for jaali screens, carved brackets, chajjas, column bands and temple work. A skilled craftsman can take it down to fine detail with hand tools, and it holds that detail through decades of weather.
As a flooring stone it has one property that matters a great deal in the North Indian summer: it stays cool. Courtyards, verandas and temple floors in Dholpur Beige are noticeably more comfortable underfoot in May than any dark stone. It is softer than granite, so we recommend a honed or sawn finish and a sealer in kitchen or dining areas.
